The Dark Side of Thailand & Southeast Asia

(The Side Expats Never Tell You)

When foreigners talk about the Dark Side of Thailand, the conversation usually goes in predictable directions. Someone brings up scams, nightlife, corruption, dangerous roads, or a bad experience they had while traveling. Those things may be part of the conversation, but after spending enough time actually living in Thailand, you begin realizing that some of the country's most interesting contradictions aren't necessarily happening in the places foreigners are looking.

There is the Thailand presented to tourists and expats, and then there is everyday life happening among Thai people themselves. The longer you live here and the closer you get to ordinary Thai life, the more you begin seeing differences that aren't obvious from the outside. Money, status, education, family background, and where someone sits socially can affect experiences in ways a foreign visitor may never recognize.

That's the Dark Side of Thailand I want to explore here. And while my experiences come primarily from Thailand, some of these conversations extend into Southeast Asia more broadly. This isn't about pretending Thailand is secretly terrible or ignoring everything that makes the country incredible. It's about looking beyond the version of Thailand foreigners are normally shown and asking a more uncomfortable question: What do you start seeing once you're no longer looking at Thailand purely through an expat or tourist lens?
