Why Is Thailand Denying Expats Entry

With Valid Visas?

Why is Thailand denying expats entry when some of them appear to have perfectly valid visas?

Recently, I have seen several expats report being denied re-entry while traveling on Education Visas, Multiple-Entry Tourist Visas and even the DTV. In many cases, immigration tells them they are using the visa to live in Thailand—but that explanation raises another question: what caused the immigration officer to scrutinize that particular traveler in the first place?

After living in Thailand for five years—and spending seventeen years in Southeast Asia—I have developed my own perspective on what may be happening. It is based on personal experience, observations of Thai culture and the similarities I have noticed across several recent immigration cases.

In the accompanying video (Why Is Thailand Denying Expats Entry even with a Valid Visa), I examine those cases and discuss an important part of entering Thailand that many foreigners overlook. A valid visa matters, but immigration officers also consider the person standing in front of them. If you frequently travel to Thailand, currently live here or plan to enter using a long-term visa, this is something you should understand before your next arrival.
